First memory at HTM?
On my second day at HTM, (February 2001) Never having done or even known what traffic management was, I was stood on the hard shoulder of the M6 battling with safety line, it was so windy that the rain was sideways, it was freezing cold and I was soaked through to the skin with lorries going passed at 58mph. I thought "this isn't for me!" (That thought didn't last long)

What do you think makes HTM such a great place to work?
The people, the opportunities, the team spirit.
Best piece of advice you've been given whilst at HTM?
"If you don't know the answer, say you don't then find it out" (Keith Baldwin 2004) This was on my first day after being promoted into the office. I sat at my desk, the phone rang, a client asked me a question and I was worried to give a wrong answer. That's when Keith gave that advice that I still use every day.
Is there a message you'd like to share on this business milestone?
I am so proud of the team of people that have helped the business reach this huge milestone. Thinking back to when I started and there were a total of 15 employees working out of a tiny depot to sitting here now with over 270 employees working out of multiple depots across the country is nothing short of amazing.

Lead Traffic Management Operative
Lead Traffic Management Operative
What is your name?
Kurt Hartree
What is your job title?
Lead Traffic Management Operative
How long have you worked for HTM?
4 years.
Tell us about your role? What do you enjoy the most?
Providing high quality traffic management for our clients. Installing, maintaining and removing traffic management, whilst following the method statements and following HTM's values. Leading a crew in order
to do this in a timely and safe manner.
The things I enjoy the most about my role is getting to know the clients, work colleagues, pedestrians and road users. We meet everyone from all walks of life. Helping all of these individuals in every way possible, from little interactions and conversations to going above and beyond to make these individuals feel valued.
First memory at HTM?
My first memory at HTM is my induction. I remember sitting in the transport office at 409. I was made to feel so welcome by the whole of the transport department. I remember sitting at Simon Barrs desk
the nervous individual I was. Then the nerves just went away as the conversations went and made me feel a part of the team already.
My first day on the road, I remember being asked after I finished my workload, if I could take Keith Baldwin to get his car from the garage. Being my first official day I was so petrified to be taking the founder of the company anywhere. But what a journey that was. The laughs we had and the fact he spoke to me in such a friendly way, like we knew each other for years. It was an honour to meet the man. He made me feel so welcome.
What are the top 3 attributes that you need to succeed in your role at HTM?
To be hard working, good at communicating and having a drive to work.
What do you believe has been the key to HTM’s success over the past 30 years?
Every single person at HTM had been the key to HTM’s success. Everyone's role plays a massive part in the achievements the company has made. Without each other, HTM wouldn't be where it is today.
What are you currently looking forward to/excited about for the business?
The company hitting 30 years, to celebrate this great milestone and the achievements the business has made throughout the years.
What advice do you have for anyone considering a career in Traffic Management?
When I started HTM I had no traffic management experience what so ever. I joined, learned and grew my knowledge massively. I am so happy to be able to pass on my knowledge to other individuals too.
So my advice is, don't feel like you have to know everything about TM. You learn and progress. With hard work and dedication, you will gain the knowledge you need. Make that jump you want and go for it. You won't be disappointed.
What do you like about working in the traffic management industry?
The walks of life you see. Down to the clients, colleagues, road users, and residents. The relationships you build and the understanding of each individual's need. Also, standing back from your job, looking at the work you have completed and being proud of what you have achieved. It gives me great satisfaction.
Which of the values resonates the strongest with you and why? (Safety, Delivery, Innovation, Collaboration, Social Value, Mental Health). What does this value mean to you?
Mental health. Every single one of the values links to each other, but in order to achieve these values, your mental health needs to be at its best.
Being able to support each other while at work - whether it’s job-related or home life- I feel mental health is so important. Make each other feel accepted and feel they are important and wanted. A happy workforce makes everyone works harder and enjoys their work. This in turn gives great client satisfaction and enables us to achieve the rest of the values.
What do you think people misunderstand about what you do?
The public think we do things just to annoy them, but that is not the case. We are doing our jobs, making the workers and public safe in the most convenient way we possibly can. It can be annoying with road works seem like they are here, there and everywhere and trust me, us Traffic Management Operatives have the same feeling sometimes. But in order to fix your road, have events etc, a slight inconvenience will be worth it in the end.
What’s your favourite memory or proudest moment while working at HTM?
Helping start the Pride movement in HTM by suggesting to management that we take part in Birmingham Pride Parade. Making the community feel more welcome within the industry. We have done this for 3 consecutive years. Each year has gotten bigger and better. Being able to say I helped start that is a great achievement and it creates memories for not only the people involved in the parade, but for the public too. Make the Pride community feel that they are accepted and welcome within traffic management.
What do you think makes HTM such a great place to work?
The individuals working here. Everyone is unique and different in the own ways. It make HTM feel so welcoming.
Best piece of advice you've been given whilst at HTM?
"Be You!" Being able to be myself at work makes me feel so happy and makes me enjoy coming to work.
Is there a message you'd like to share on this business milestone?
Congratulations, 30 whole years. To be a part of celebrating 30 is a pleasure. Here to another 30 years. Keith would be so proud and his legacy will always be with us all.

Lead Traffic Management Operative
What is your name?
Aaron Rowles
What is your job title?
Lead Traffic Management Operative
How long have you worked for HTM?
4 years
Tell us about your role? What do you enjoy the most?
As a Lead TMO at HTM my role is to ensure a safe, smooth delivery of temporary traffic management for our clients. Prior to any shift, I deliver a briefing to all operatives who are working on the job and ensuring all aspects of health and safety are met and all operatives understood the tasks that are required for the days work ahead.
First memory at HTM?
My first memory at HTM was heading into the office for my driving assessment with Simon Barr from the transport department. I was made to feel very welcomed into the HTM Head Office by Polly and then was met by the transport team.
What are the top 3 attributes that you need to succeed in your role at HTM?
Great Communication. Striving to deliver high standards of TTM. Being an approachable and friendly individual.
What do you believe has been the key to HTM’s success over the past 30 years?
Whether you work in the office or out on the road, the key to success is following the values that HTM have. Over the past 30 years, this has been passed down through Keith's legacy; he strived to ensure
HTM was and still is the best it can be throughout the workforce.
What are you currently looking forward to/excited about for the business?
Celebrating the milestone of 30 years of HTM and many more years to come.
What advice do you have for anyone considering a career in Traffic Management?
My advice for anyone who is considering a career in traffic management is, even if you have no knowledge of traffic management and haven't worked in the industry before, give it a go.
What do you like about working in the traffic management industry?
Building a great rapport with clients, colleagues and members of the public whilst completing daily task requirements to the highest standards.
Which of the values resonates the strongest with you and why? (Safety, Delivery, Innovation, Collaboration, Social Value, Mental Health). What does this value mean to you?
All of the HTMs' values are somewhat linked in one way or another, but the main value I have chosen is Mental Health.
Mental health is very important for day-to-day living. Whether it be home life or work life, mental health can be impacted.
This value ensures that the help and support is there for you and with myself being one of the Mental Health First Aiders within the business, I am able to offer the guidance and support to other colleagues that may not be having a great day or that just need a bit of help to pick themselves up and carry on.
What do you think people misunderstand about what you do?
A lot of people just think that we do the job that we do just to disrupt the road network, and don't realise that we are there to protect them and our clients and workforce whilst road works are happening.
What’s your favourite memory or proudest moment while working at HTM?
My proudest moment at HTM has to be when myself and others from the LGBT+ community who work within the business came up with the idea of entering the Birmingham Pride Parade. HTM had its own float and was the only TM company at the time that took part in the parade, and still does go along each year for the past 3 years to this event.
What do you think makes HTM such a great place to work?
Working with a variety of operatives, been able to learn from one another and able to share your knowledge and experience with the workforce.
Best piece of advice you've been given whilst at HTM?
Don't let anyone dull your sparkle. Carry on being you.
Is there a message you'd like to share on this business milestone?
Congratulations on reaching 30 years of HTM. May there be many more years to come.

I manage our marketing and communications, both externally and internally. I love the variety within my role, working with different departments and coming up with new ways to share HTM's incredible story, from being on site taking photos, to coming up with exciting initiatives and campaigns, I enjoy what I do.
First memory at HTM?
It would be being greeted by the infamous HTM dogs, Fletch and Wally at my interview. I was quite nervous and they made me feel much more relaxed. After that, it would be the first breakfast meeting we had in what is now the new HTM HQ, back when it was an empty (and very dusty!) old showroom space. The meeting was very relaxed and informative and I got a feel for what HTM’s culture was like.

Which of the values resonates the strongest with you and why? (Safety, Delivery, Innovation, Collaboration, Social Value, Mental Health).
Innovation - Our founder Keith was a true innovator and I think the business is able to adapt and change as is required in order to remain successful. Not always through product innovation, but in a forward-thinking approach and 'Streets Ahead' mentality. We are always looking ahead and striving to be the best we can be.
What’s your favourite memory or proudest moment while working at HTM?
My favourite memory is a tough one. So I'm going to cheat and share a few!
1) Hosting the first-ever Streets Ahead awards. Having come up with the initial concept of the VIP (Values In Practice) Nominations, getting this to our first physical in-house awards event was a proud moment and seeing the joy it gave not just our operatives, but the pride Keith showed in seeing the workforce rewarded was amazing.
2) Surprising Greg with his own Inspirational Leader award this year at the most recent Streets Ahead awards. It's not often you get to keep a secret and surprise your MD with something like this. Seeing Greg realise what was happening was a special moment.

Head of Commercial
Head of Commercial
What is your name?
Ross Simpson
What is your job title?
Head of Commercial
How long have you worked for HTM?
20 years
Tell us about your role? What do you enjoy the most?
My role consists of developing and implementing commercial strategies aligned with business objectives, ensuring profitable growth for the business.
Having recently stepped into the role of Head of Commercial, following in-depth conversations with business directors and the development of a tailored job description, I’ve already found the position both rewarding and energising.
What I enjoy most is the insight it’s giving me into key business functions — particularly around financial performance. Monitoring project profitability and ensuring revenue targets are met has given me a
deeper understanding of how commercial decisions directly impact the company’s strength and sustainability.
It’s not only contributing to the growth of the business, but also significantly expanding my own skillset and strategic thinking. That balance — between business impact and personal development — is what I’m finding most enjoyable in this role so far.
First memory at HTM?
It’s incredible to see how far our industry—and health & safety standards—have come over the years. I still vividly remember my very first day: I turned up in combat trousers and trainers, was handed a piece of paper with nothing but a road name scribbled on it, a hi-vis vest, a pair of gloves, and was introduced to someone with a quick, ‘Here’s Simon, you’ll be working with him.’ They handed me the keys to a vehicle and said, ‘Crack on!’ And that was it - no induction, no brief! Looking back now, it’s almost unthinkable how different things were. The evolution since then, both in terms of professionalism and safety, has been massive and for all the right reasons.
What are the top 3 attributes that you need to succeed in your role at HTM?
Commercial acumen, leadership and drive.
What do you believe has been the key to HTM’s success over the past 30 years?
Strong industry expertise, adaptability and innovation. Also creating strong partnerships and maintaining high levels of communication, both externally and internally.
What are you currently looking forward to/excited about for the business?
Being part of HTM’s growth year after year has been both challenging and incredibly exciting. With the continued expansion of the business and the addition of some fantastic new team members, I’m genuinely excited about the direction we're heading. I’m proud to be part of the journey and can’t wait to see just how far HTM can go!
What advice do you have for anyone considering a career in Traffic Management?
If you’re safety-conscious, calm under pressure, and enjoy being part of keeping people safe and projects moving, traffic management can be a stable, rewarding career. Like any job, it has challenges, but it also plays a vital role in public safety and infrastructure.
What do you like about working in the traffic management industry?
Over the years, I've built strong industry knowledge and developed lasting relationships with clients in an ever-evolving environment to which I knew nothing about 20 years ago!
Which of the values resonates the strongest with you and why? (Safety, Delivery, Innovation, Collaboration, Social Value, Mental Health).
Mental health is something very close to my heart, as it’s something I’ve personally struggled with—and continue to face. By speaking openly about it and making it more relevant in everyday conversations, I believe we can break down stigma and create spaces where people feel seen, supported, and not alone.
What’s your favourite memory or proudest moment while working at HTM?
Over the past 20 years, I’ve had many opportunities to grow since starting out in the industry. Through the training, knowledge, and support I received both in business and within the industry, I’ve been able to set clear goals for my personal and professional development and continue to do so.
What do you think makes HTM such a great place to work?
From top to bottom and vice versa, despite the growth of the business, it has always maintained a family feel, built on openness and honesty.
Best piece of advice you've been given whilst at HTM?
Always feel empowered to express yourself on your journey toward achieving your goals and personal growth.
Is there a message you'd like to share on this business milestone?
Reaching this milestone is not just a reflection of the business's growth, but also a testament to the people behind it. Over the past 20 years, I’ve had the privilege of developing both personally and professionally, thanks to the training, knowledge, and unwavering support I’ve received. What stands out the most is that, no matter how much the business has evolved, it has always kept that family feel—grounded in honesty, openness, and mutual respect. I’m proud to be part of this journey and excited for what’s ahead.

What do you think people misunderstand about what you do?
Sometimes I feel people may see myself in my yellows and assume I'm just a low-paid labourer on the end of a shovel etc, but I feel strongly that I'm a skilled worker & what I / we do with the traffic on the motorway of a night is a skill, that not everyone could do.
What’s your favourite memory or proudest moment while working at HTM?

How long have you worked for HTM?
20 years next February!
Tell us about your role? What do you enjoy the most?
Setting up, building a good working relationship with and managing our suppliers.
Exploring new products, negotiating costs and ensuring a good service for HTM.
Working closely with all our depots and staff to manage, maintain and ensure we are efficient with all our equipment hires.
Managing stock levels within all our depots with regular catch ups and stock takes with each department.
And loads of other stuff that crops up needing some TLC!
I enjoy working with a wide variety of different people, suppliers and departments. The great work-life balance and ethos at HTM make it easier to get out of bed in the morning!/p>
First memory at HTM?
Putting hundreds of metal barriers out in the morning and then collecting them every night. Oh yeah, and it was freezing cold. My body didn't know what had hit it! But this was with all my Slovakian "Brothers" who taught me so much and took me under their wings. They had the "work hard, play hard"; attitude which is so HTM.
What are the top 3 attributes that you need to succeed in your role at HTM?
Communication, Negotiating and Attention To Detail.
What do you believe has been the key to HTM’s success over the past 30 years?
Being proactive, whether it be with innovation or
a safety issue, HTM want to lead the way. Always growing at a steady pace. Literally doing TM to a high standard and doing the best for our Client, even if we sometimes need to be honest and explain that there are some things we can't do. Getting the right people in the right job roles. The time and effort dedicated towards training. Welcoming in people from all walks of life and
giving everyone a fair chance.
But mainly all this is down to HTM's Godfather, Keith Baldwin, he did it his way and took us all along for the ride!/p>
What are you currently looking forward to/excited about for the business?
Exploring potential new products and trialling them. Unlocking more potential/understanding of our new IT systems. Helping set up and develop new Depots in new areas as and when we expand. What do you like about working in the traffic management industry?
The people. It is an industry that does have that "we are in this together" vibe. It is that link between keeping our Clients and the public safe at the same time. I also like the attention to safety and training. There are always those people above trying to improve the industry and make it a better place. Also the variety of work, not always doing the same type of TM.
Which of the values resonates the strongest with you and why? (Safety, Delivery, Innovation, Collaboration, Social Value, Mental Health).
Safety trumps all, we want everyone to go home in one piece after each shift. But for my particular job role it would be Collaboration. The working with suppliers to get exactly what our operations and depot teams need in reality is the goal.
What’s your favourite memory or proudest moment while working at HTM?
My favourite memory is those Friday afternoons where the Depot Staff had grafted hard to get the weekend and Monday prepped. We would then sit outside in the sun, having some food and laughs together. It never lasted long as we then got bombarded with some last-minute stuff!
What do you think makes HTM such a great place to work?
The people, the banter, the graft.

30 years in business is a significant achievement for any business. Whilst I wasn't at HTM when Keith started HTM, I've seen its growth over the years. One of the most impressive aspects of HTM is it still feels like a small family-run business, despite being far more than that now. The foundations and principles the business was built upon seem as relevant today as they were when the first cone went out 30 years ago.

What advice do you have for anyone considering a career in Traffic Management?
People think TM isn't for women, but they couldn't be more wrong. Don’t be put off by the typical industry image of it being ’hard-hat, male-dominated' work. Women are increasingly joining as TMO's. Physical
demands exist, but the industry also values planning, communication, and compliance skills—areas where women can excel.
What do you like about working in the traffic management industry?
For myself, no day is the same, and working out on the road on a weekend gives me great satisfaction.
Which of the values resonates the strongest with you and why? (Safety, Delivery, Innovation, Collaboration, Social Value, Mental Health).
The value that resonates most strongly with me is Social Value. As a Fleet Administrator, I see every vehicle and every journey as more than just transport—they’re part of a wider system. By keeping the fleet compliant, safe and efficient, I’m helping ensure that drivers can work confidently, goods and services reach people on time, and the environmental impact is minimised. For me, social value also means promoting fairness, sustainability, and inclusivity in the workplace. Knowing that the work I do contributes to safer roads, stronger communities, and a more responsible industry gives real meaning to my role.
What do you think people misunderstand about what you do?
That it’s a male-only industry!
What’s your favourite memory or proudest moment while working at HTM?

Depot Operative
How long have you worked for HTM?
3 years +
Tell us about your role? What do you enjoy the most?
I'm tasked with being the lead depot operative at 409 Tyburn Road stores, mainly looking after and sorting through high speed signs and specials.
Daily tasks for high speed include putting away and sorting any return plate back to it's designated areas and repairing any damaged plate so it can be reused.
With the specials, daily tasks include stripping vinyl off plate back to template, dependant on the type of plate, assigning returns that have been stripped back to its designated space and making specials ready for collection.
What I enjoy most is having a team behind me that supports what we do. Having a strong foundation within the team helps run a smooth work process that makes tasks a lot easier to deal with.

What advice do you have for anyone considering a career in Traffic Management?
ITM is a good job to get into, it's such a diverse career with different paths to take, there's lots of different types of jobs and not everyday is the same.
What do you like about working in the traffic management industry?
Having lots of colleagues that you get to know well along the way. Being able to design and prepare specials for jobs.
Which of the values resonates the strongest with you and why? (Safety, Delivery, Innovation, Collaboration, Social Value, Mental Health).
Innovation and Collaboration.
I picked both because Innovation is probably the strongest that resonates with me, but collaboration is needed in all aspects.
Whatever part of the business I have worked with, I have always asked myself, how can this be done better, I'm always one for nothing is perfect; there's always something that can be improved.
First major role was locating kit for Kieran B, while doing this I came up with a good working system for locating kit which will take the least amount of trips and minimal time to do it. As I worked the contract, I found ways to improve and always tried to improve the process.
As that chapter ended, I was moved onto Dan L with the Advanced Warning Signs (AWS) for Birmingham. I managed to sort an unordered list to make collections easier. Dan then asked me to assist with production. While observing for a couple of days and helping, I found a few obstacles and came up with solutions to overcome them, which streamlined the production. After a bit of time, we were working well within the 7-day advanced warning notice.
Now currently I work within the stores leading a small team keeping track of specials and high-speed kit. Again, when joining I observed for a time to see how things went, and come up with solutions to any obstacles I had identified.
I strongly feel that everyone should try to be innovative, always trying to improve their work process to help build a better future for everyone. But without collaboration, this would not be possible, so this is a strong value too.
What’s your favourite memory or proudest moment while working at HTM?
Being nominated and winning a Streets Ahead award 2 years on the bounce.
