Highway Traffic Management Senior HSEQ Manager sat down with Counsellor Sheila McMahon to discuss mental health practices, theTalk More campaign and strategies he uses to manage his own mental health and wellbeing.

HTM’s 2023 Talk More campaign was all about just that, talking more about mental health, so Matt Higgs was happy to talk more about the campaign and general health and wellbeing with registered counsellor Sheila McMahon as part of her ‘Counsellor Convos’ podcast series.

Sheila is a BACP registered, qualified counsellor who mixes counselling with comedy as part of her training, talks and shows. This helps reduce the social stigma that surrounds mental health issues and learn whilst laughing.

Sheila and Matt discuss the importance of conversations around mental health, one of HTM’s six company values, and the ways in which the temporary traffic management business has helped to keep the conversation going around mental health and wellbeing ever since the start of the Talk More campaign in 2017, a campaign set up by HTM’s MD and owner, Greg Baldwin and Business Director, Marcus Casey.

The business has worked continuously to improve it’s mental health offering for employees as well as raise awareness within the highways and construction industry about the benefits of being open about mental health, particularly in an industry that is predominantly male-dominated. As statistics show, 1 in 4 British adults experience at least one diagnosable mental health problem in any one year. Men are also far less likely to talk about their mental health problems, and unfortunately, suicide is the largest cause of death for men under 50.

In the podcast they delve into how the campaign progressed from a fact-finding survey to a video, and into ‘Talk More Scores,’ where the business proactively reaches out to employees to check in with how they are getting on and their current frame of mind and mental wellbeing, something that they complete on a monthly basis to this day.

Along with lots of other insights, Sheila finds out how Matt looks after his mental health by running, as well as finding out more about the more recent Talk More campaign that was launched in January 2023 and the ways in which HTM have ensured that mental health and wellbeing remain a focus for the business and high on their agenda.
