Traffic management requires a lot of communication and teamwork, and these qualities are just as important as your career within the industry progresses.

Our Supervisors help to provide an overview of a number of sites which is why having a vast amount of experience across a variety of jobs is so important, teamed with the ability to support different types of learners and understand our client’s needs.

Carlton is one of our Supervisors, acting as support for both the Contracts Coordinators within the office and supporting the teams working out on site in a more hands-on capacity. We chatted to Carlton to find out more about his role and his time at HTM so far.

How long have you worked at HTM?

Almost 6 years!

Tell us a bit about your role?

As a supervisor it’s my job to ensure that jobs are being installed correctly and to help educate and inform operatives that need assistance on a daily basis. I also am able to be the eyes on the ground for Coordinators and help feedback any information from site.

Have you always worked in the TM industry?

I haven’t always worked in the TM industry. Prior to TM I used to work on the railways and before that I used to run a pub.

How did you find it adapting to/joining the traffic management industry?

It was fairly easy. The amount of people that worked for the company at the time was limited so it was easy to get to know everyone, it was like a family. The business is growing and there’s more faces to try and remember now!

Which of the values resonates the strongest with you and why? (Safety, Delivery, Innovation, Collaboration, Social Value, Mental Health).

Would like to think mental health resonates strongest with me as I have had bad mental health in the past and I’ve been able to help people that have found themselves in those dark times.

If you could have a super power, what would it be?

Probably the ability to time travel.

Favourite film?

Life (1999) Martin Lawrence and Eddie Murphy.

What are the top 3 attributes that you need to succeed in your role at HTM?

To be hardworking, consistent and adaptable.

What do you enjoy most in your job role?

Getting to share my experiences and knowledge with the operatives. It’s rewarding educating people and helping them to develop their skills. The ultimate goal is to have those operatives then doing the same and supporting others onsite in a similar manner.

What motivates you?

My son.

What are you currently looking forward to/excited about for the business?

The new HQ and to find out how we have done in terms of hitting our targets across the board at the end of the year.

What advice do you have for women considering a career in Traffic Management?

Go for it. Although it may seem like a predominantly male environment women are just as welcome as men and they are treated equally and fairly and more women are finding themselves working within TM.

Your perfect weekend would look like…?

Fishing with my son.

If you could swap shoes with someone for the day, who would it be and why?

Probably my son so I could have an easy day!

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

In a higher level of management, running my own crews and contracts.

Song guaranteed to get you on the dance floor?

Been a while since I’ve got on a dance floor. Maybe something bassy.

Knowing what you know now, what advice would you give your 18-year old self?

Work hard at everything you do and accomplish everything you work for.

What do you like about working in the traffic management industry?

Would have to be working with the crews on the road and teaching them what I know.

Why should people want to work for HTM?

It’s an opportunity to travel, work around the country and meet new people.
